Blu-ray Will Drive PS3 Sales
Sony Worldwide Studios boss Phil Harrison has stated he feels Sony will maintain its dominance as market leader with PS3, attributing Blu-ray as a major factor to the consoles success.
In an interview conducted at the recent Game Developers Conference, Harrison stated, “I think we have everything that we need to compete, not just relative to the other players in the market but also to grow the market. This is something that is part of our corporate culture."
Harrison declared that upcoming network services and increasing interest in Blu-ray films would ensure strong sales for the console, in addition to the PS3's strong software line-up.
"That is a positive factor which will play more into the consumer psyche as the year goes on, as more consumer electronics firms launch standalone disc players, as more Blu-ray disc movies become available, and as more shelf space is dedicated to the category at retail”, he added.
He also believes that Blu-ray will eclipse any other movie format in a relatively short period of time, likeable to that of DVD surpassing VHS.
"In America, where PS3 disc is already out, Blu-ray disc is surging ahead as the next-generation movie format of choice. It's absolutely trouncing any other formats, and I think we'll see the same in Europe and the UK", Harrison concluded.
